The Dutch government is in disarray a Diginotar - main PKI supplier - has been hacked and possibly some more was done besides a Iranian proxy copy for google.com.
You don't have to be a main PKI SSL certificate authority to have the interest of your competitors, wouldn't they love to have their hands on your margins, pricing- and customer data. OK, proper law abiding companies don't break the law but look at the amount of compromised data each year.
Suppose your site runs a web shop on an old version of Joomla, is your data safe or not, what about customer data, payment details? Joomla and the shop software suppliers create security updates to patch holes found in their product.
